is often called the second capital of Russia. It was founded in 1703 by Tzar Peter the Great where the Neva flows into the Baltic Sea. The birth of the city was a historical borderline between the Russian Middle Ages and the New Era. The most advanced outpost of Russia on the western frontiers and the main port on the Baltic, it became truly a «window into Europe». The Russian Navy, the Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Arts, the first museums and the first theatres were all built on the banks of the Neva, and it was there, too, that Russian industry was developed. For two centuries, St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia.
Spread out over forty-four islands, this city is beautiful at all times of year. And especially during the magic time of the White Nights.

The Golden Ring consists of Russian ancient cities and towns, famous for their history and architectural monuments, which played the very important role in the consolidation of our state.
Vladimir, one of the oldest Russian towns with architectural monuments of XII century, bears the name of its founder Prince Vladimir Monomakh. We found first mention of the city in XII c. when Vladimir became capital of North-Eastern Russia (Vladimir's Russia).
The region of Vladimir is also famous for the majestic and unique Church of the Intercession on the Nerl (1165) often called «the miracle of poetry in the stone» and Suzdal museum-preserve including Suzdal Kremlin, Monasteries and Convents, unique museum of woden architecture.
Being nearly of the same age as Moscow, Kostroma plaid a very important role in life of our state as the birthplace of Romanov dynasty. In 1613 the young Mikhail Romanov was proclaimed the Tsar of Russia at the Ipatiev Monastery.
Now the big industrial city, Yaroslavl keeps its famous past history from 1010 where it was founded as an outpost of the Principality of Rostov Veliky, and was first mentioned in 1071 It is situated on the high bank of Kotorosl river where from the magnificent panorama of the city is opened.
According to the chronics Rostov-the-Great was founded in the IX c. In XV с it became a religious centre for Moscow principality. It is situated on the picturesque coast of Nero Lake. The Rostov Kremlin built in XVII с as the Metropolitan's residence is the real gem of the Golden Ring' monuments. Rostov is also well known for its enamels.
Pereslavl-Zalessky was founded by Prince Yury Dolgoruky in 1152. It is there that Peter the Great built his «fun flotilia» on Lake Pleshcheevo.
Alexandrovskaya Sloboda (Alexandrov), the tsar’s residence in the Alexandrovskaya village (also known as the Alexandrovsky Kremlin) is an old Russian fortress which served as the actual capital of the oprichnina in the Moscow state from 1564 until 1581 under Ivan the Terrible.
The town of Sergiev Posad got its name from St Sergius who was born in the neighbouring town of Radonezh and in the middle of XIV с founded the largest and most important monastery in Russia well known as the HoleTrinity-St-Sergius Lavra (Monastery) in the suburbs of Moscow. Now it is a centre of religious life in Russia. The complex of the Lavra includes the Theological Seminary, the largest collection of religious literature and icons and treasures.
